Dementia-Friendly Collection

The Brighton Public Library is certified as a Dementia-Friendly Community Supporter through the Alzheimer Society of Hastings-Prince Edward. Our staff members have received training on how to support people living with dementia, as well as their loved ones. Following this training, we began adding items to our collection that can be used by people experiencing cognitive difficulties as listed below. All of the dementia friendly resources can be placed on hold from our online catalogue or by calling 613-475-2511.

Collection in Our Online Catalogue

Living with Dementia - This list includes a mix of medical, emotional, historical and even funny books - for caregivers, patients and family members (including children).

Your Dementia-Friendly library also has Cognitive Care Readers and Cognitive Care Kits available for caregivers to use with those experiencing dementia. Speak with our staff to choose what's right for you.

Cognitive Care Readers

Our Cognitive Care Readers are designed to make reading accessible for people experiencing cognitive struggles. They feature large print that is on a single page, along with an extra set of text and instructions for a loved one to read along and provide support.

Cognitive Care Kits

Our Cognitive Care Kits provide a wealth of activities to be shared with a person experiencing cognitive difficulties. Several puzzles, games and tactile options are available in each kit, and every kit is different. These can be signed out, placed on hold or renewed like any other library item.

In addition, each kit contains a Fiddly Blanket, crafted and donated by the Happy Quilters of Brighton. You may keep the blanket when you sign out a kit! Ask for assistance selecting a kit at the main desk.
